Unity became reduced to ‘matchwood’ in a ferocious storm between Aberaeron and New Quay in 1807. Her cargo of coal was strewn across the beach. At first it was thought that all hands had perished, but it turned out the master had ordered the crew into the ship’s boat, where they were later picked up by a smuggling vessel and landed safely at New Quay.
